From the The Writer's World series

Edward Hirsch (editor), Brenda Wineapple (editor)

Essays, letters, poems, prose, and excerpts of interviews by fifty-seven leading authors of the century

Nineteenth-Century American Writers on Writing features essays, letters, poems, prose, and excerpts of interviews by fifty-seven writers of the century, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Fanny Fern, Ulysses S. Grant, William James, and Frances Harper. Each of these writers confronted what it meant for a literature to be defined as “American” during a century rocked by the industrial revolution, civil war, and the emergence of a global politics. Each of these writers had to form a community of writers in a country that did not necessarily support them, and each of them had to figure out what individual self-reliance meant in terms of the relatively new nation they spoke to, for, and about.
